Who We Are
Chalis Sledge Henderson understands the importance of being actively involved in a community greater than self while pursuing a higher education degree. As a student at Warren County High School, Chalis was actively involved in student government and athletics. She graduate from Warren County High School in 2007 with academic honors. During her tenure in college, she was heavily involved and committed to co-curricular activities. While being involved, she maintained excellent grades and graduated with honors (Cum Laude). She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Communication Studies with a minor in Women & Gender Studies and a Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University in Student Affairs Administration.
Chalis wishes to bless other college students who are involved in greater communities and striving for academic excellence. She is grateful for the opportunity to be a blessing to students.
The Chalis Sledge Henderson Scholarship was founded in 2011 when Chalis decided to begin a fund that provided scholarships to students at her church, Oasis of Hope Ministries. Chalis wanted a way to give back to the ministry which had helped her develop and succeed academically, socially, and, most importantly, spiritually.
The first scholarship was presented to Philip Harris, Jr. in the amount of $250 in August 2012. Philip was a senior at North Carolina A&T State University. Funding for the first scholarship was provided by Chalis D. Sledge. To prepare for the next academic school year, the foundation hosted a fundraiser that included area churches and community leaders. The first fundraiser raised over $1000 for scholarships! In August 2013, two scholarships were presented to Philip Harris, Jr and Sinteil Crews in the amount of $350 each. In 2014, three $500 scholarships were awarded, which included two to seniors at Warren County High School. In 2015, two $500 scholarships were awarded. To celebrate 5 years of service, two $5,000 scholarships were awarded in 2016.
To date, $14,450 has been awarded to eight outstanding students!
The Chalis Sledge Henderson Scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors of Warren County High School and college students who are members of Oasis of Hope Ministries. Students must demonstrate outstanding service to his/her educational institution, local community, and church.
